ESCOpedia
European Commission has developed ESCO as a common interlinked vocabulary of occupations, skills, competences and qualifications. ESCO can be used by public employment services, but also by private operators, such as job boards, HR software vendors and professional network sites.
To further explore the use of ESCO by private operators, the Commission has successfully run a pilot project with the world's largest professional network with more than 562 million users worldwide. The pilot project aimed at testing the level of correspondence between ESCO and LinkedIn skills classifications. The project mapped 1,483 LinkedIn skills concepts to 1,522 ESCO concepts, allowing both parties to draw some conclusions on the differences between the two skills lists in terms of concepts descriptions, concept formulation, different focus groups and the level of abstraction of skills.
The project showed the value of ESCO for improving job matching services in the European labour market.
"LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce, and we believe that ESCO is a powerful tool that can help achieve this aim within the European Union", says John Herlihy, Managing Director of LinkedIn EMEA.
"By providing a complete and up-to-date taxonomy of skills and competences, which can be used to match job candidates and job vacancies across national boundaries, ESCO can help businesses to offer more job opportunities to more professionals. This is also a significant step in fostering collaboration between public employment services across Europe."
