The new online service will be based on ESCO, which will replace the currently used ISCO-88 classification for job matching.

With this initiative, Iceland is among the first countries that adopt the ESCO classification on national level.

Thanks to ESCO jobseekers can better understand job vacancies as those will be described more accurately, including multilingual information on the knowledge, skills and competences required for the job. ESCO is free and published as Linked Open Data. The ESCO API makes it easy for public or private services to use ESCO in their online services and to link it to other data sources. Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).

In the Member Countries of the EEA, the free movement of workers is a fundamental right which permits nationals of one EEA country to work in another EEA country on the same conditions as that member country’s own citizens. The unemployment rate in Iceland is below 3%.
